Hurst Rethink have launched their first three Terracycle collection schemes. These schemes collect items that cannot go in our blue recycling bins, which would otherwise be thrown into landfill.
Terracycle is a private company that recycles these items. The recycling is paid for by the companies that produce the products and in return, Terracycle pays us per box of waste – which we can then put towards eco initiatives in the village. So it’s win-win! Please save up your items and bring them to our bins, which are located near the Village Green.
Here are the details of what you can recycle:
1. Crisp Packet Recycling
This scheme accepts ANY kind of crisp packet. They don’t accept popcorn bags or crisp tubes so please don’t put these in.
You can recycle these in the marked wheelie bin outside the Hurst Community Charity Shop in Hurstpierpoint or in the marked wheelie bin at the entrance to the football pitch at the Reeds Lane Recreation Ground in Sayers Common.
2. Confectionery Recycling
This scheme accepts any kind of confectionery packaging such as plastic chocolate and sweets pouches and bags, chocolate and sweets multi pack and outer plastic packaging. We also accept individual chocolate bar wrappers and chocolate block wrappers.
This scheme doesn’t accept breakfast, granola or energy bar wrappers. We also don’t accept foil wrappers, metal tins and rigid plastic trays and tub so please don’t put these in.

3. Personal Care Product Recycling
This scheme accepts plastic and metallic plastic tubes used for body creams, ointments and moisturisers. We also accept plastic packaging used for cleansing wipes.
Cosmetic packaging we accept includes eye shadow compacts, lip and cheek highlighter and bronzer sticks, mascara tubes and wands, lipstick, lip gloss and lip balms.
You can recycle these at Columbines Health and Beauty next to the Village Green in Hurstpierpoint.
Happy collecting!
What about pet food sachets?
We are considering these but are trialling these three schemes first before we roll out more.
Absolutely brilliant. I will put the info in my village column in the Mid Sussex Times for next week. Sorry, too late to get in on 15 April.
I’m really pleased this is coming to the village, but really keen to pet pouches as I normally drive to Brighton to drop these off.
